Course Description
Credit Validation for Slingerland Participants Only
This course covers a four-week or six-week period of intensive study. It offers training etiology and diagnosis of specific language disability (dyslexia) and provides training in the techniques designed for a preventive and/or remedial program for classroom use. These techniques were developed by Beth H. Slingerland as an adaptation of the multisensory approach originated by Dr. Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. They are based on upon sound neurological principles of learning. These techniques give the child tools needed to function successfully in all areas of language arts, whether reading, writing, spelling or speaking. Course objectives:
- Provide instruction in the foundational steps of handwriting, written language, decoding, and reading comprehension
- Develop an understanding of the etiology and characteristics of dyslexia
- Introduce phonic rules and demonstrate their application to both encoding and decoding
- Build understanding of the neurology of language and strategies for developing oral language skills
- Present information on the history, philosophy, and current research related to dyslexia
- Guide participants in understanding how curriculum and classroom organization support an effective language arts program
- Apply multisensory teaching principles through daily practice and work with children
Learner Outcomes
- Explain the principles of multisensory instruction as supported by current research
- Analyze the development of oral language skills as they relate to written language
- Identify major characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based reading disabilities
- Describe the organization of the English language and the application of morphology to encoding and decoding
- Apply the Slingerland® Approach to existing classroom curriculum materials
- Design and implement daily language arts lessons using the Slingerland® Approach to Language Arts

Instructors: All instructors are certified in the Slingerland Multisensory Structured Language Approach.
University of San Diego – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information
The University of San Diego partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.
Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways. These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the University of San Diego; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.
Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.
