Course Description

Credit Validation for San Diego County Office of Education's TK Pathway for Credentialed Teachers Participants Only

Influenced by The California Early Childhood Curriculum Alignment Project (CAP), and in consideration of credentialed teachers working with children in Transitional Kindergarten (TK), this course introduces students to the developmentally appropriate use of screenings, assessment and observation tools. Students will also learn strategies to document young children’s development and learning. The use of findings to inform and plan learning environments and experiences to differentiate and meet the needs of each child will be emphasized. Multiple assessment tools will be discussed and students will also explore how screening tools are used in early childhood education to support the child, family, and teacher.

Learner Outcomes

  • Differentiate the characteristics, strengths, limitations, and applications of contemporary observation, assessment, and screening tools and demonstrate basic formative and summative assessment techniques
  • Apply knowledge of child development and other influencing factors to interpret screening results, observations, and assessments inclusive of logistical challenges, biases, and preconceptions about observing and assessing children
  • Demonstrate how screening, observation, and assessment data are used to plan for and adjust learning experiences according to children's individual needs
