Course Description

Credit Validation for San Diego County Office of Education Added Authorization Candidates Only

All candidates must be enrolled first with SDCOE Added Authorizations Program prior to registering for credit validation with USD. Please visit the SDCOE AASE website for program enrollment information.

This course focuses on a wide variety of topics and issues related to Deaf/Blind (DB). Many different aspects of DB are examined from a variety of different vantage points and perspectives. Course content includes Introduction to Deafblindness, Causes of Deafblindness, Communication strategies for students who are deafblind, Vestibular effects on students with deafblindness, Teaching strategies for students who are deafblind, Tactile sensitivity and sensory over/under load. By the end of this course, you will be able to identify the most common causes of deafblindness and understand the cognitive, communicative and social impact on students who are deafblind. You will also walk away with knowledge of teaching, communication, and tactile strategies when working with students with deafblindness.

Other topics in this component include: vestibular and tactile systems of students who are deafblind; communication systems; calendar systems; service providers; and deafblind culture.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify the most common causes of deaf-blindness
  • Develop an understanding of the cognitive, communicative and social impact on students who are deafblind
  • Know and understand teaching, communication, and tactile strategies when working with students with deaf-blindness
  • Understand the educational implications for students who are deafblind on cognition, behavior, communication, and socialization
  • Examine aspects of communication for students who are deafblind
