Course Description

Learn How to Combine Two Reading Approaches to Best Leverage Literacy within the Classroom

Research has shown that there are benefits to both Phonics-based and Whole Language theories of reading instruction and that most students are most successful if a combination of the two approaches are integrated into instruction. In this course you will develop a deep understanding of both teaching practices, evaluate your classrooms needs and create an approach that you think will be most beneficial. Examining the grade-level learning goals, you will determine how you will address each learning goal and map out instruction.

  • Explain the elements that make up Phonics-based Instruction and the Whole Language Approach
  • Recognize the advantages of Phonics-based Instruction
  • Recognize the advantages of the Whole Language Approach
  • Identify learning goals and blend the reading techniques to best address them
  • Design an appropriate assessment to show mastery of learning goals

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for teachers that want to utilize a balance of Phonics-based Reading and the Whole Language Approach.
