Course Description

Learn Creative Techniques for Integrating Literature with Language Teaching

This course focuses on strategies for implementing literature into the classroom with English language learners. The curriculum provides a rationale for the use of literature in the classroom with language learners and principles for selecting appropriate reading materials and activities. It suggests criteria for selecting and evaluating materials for classroom use and identifies some of the distinctive features of novels, short stories, poems and plays so that these can be explored in the classroom. Tasks also encourage the observation and assessment of lessons using literacy texts, and integrate English language material by a variety of authors from various countries. The course also focuses on developing practical materials and strategies for cognitively and effectively engaging learners through the integration of a variety of pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading techniques. The course provides activities for scaffolding literature instruction and for developing critical reading and discussion.
