Course Description

Credit Validation for Dyslexia Training Institute Participants Only

Participants will learn how to become effective advocates for parents/caregivers of students with dyslexia. This will include: developing an understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities and Education Act (IDEA); FAPE; developing effective IEPs or 504s; how to request and receive appropriate services and interventions; appropriate accommodations; letter writing, dispute processes and resolutions, as they all relate to a student with dyslexia. Participants will complete a case study.

Learner Outcomes

  • Define dyslexia to effectively explain it to parents/caregivers and school personnel
  • Recognize the role of an advocate and when to refer parents/caregivers to an attorney
  • Evaluate IDEA law as it relates to dyslexia
  • Locate the state's Ed Code as it relates to Special Education
  • Review and understand assessment and evaluations
  • Evaluate and develop IEPs or 504 Plans for a student with dyslexia
  • Understand the steps to dispute resolution

Number of Units: 3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend:  This course provides continuing education for educators participating in online course provided by Dyslexia Training Institute.
