Course Description
Credit Validation For San Diego County Office of Education Added Authorization Candidates Only
All candidates must be enrolled first with SDCOE Added Authorizations Program prior to registering for credit validation with USD. Please visit the SDCOE AASE website for program enrollment information.This course focuses on a wide variety of topics and issues related to students with orthopedic impairments. It consists of 140 contact hours and covers the four OI AA Standards. Course content includes the following: sequence and characteristics of typical development; characteristics of various orthopedic impairments and their impact on development; major medical and therapeutic treatments; appropriate assessments to facilitate access and response modes; Common Core State Standards in core subjects; importance of collaboration with others; positive behavioral supports and strategies; factors related to speech and language development; examples of low/mid/high technology accommodations; descriptions of typical equipment, services, and other agencies available for specialized health care information; safe lifting and positioning practices; appropriate use of rehabilitative equipment; activities to support experiences that contribute to student independence and self-determination; potential challenges during transitional periods; and the process of identifying and selecting available and appropriate personal accommodations. The expected candidate outcome is demonstration of knowledge and awareness regarding major issues related to students with orthopedic impairments.

- Identify, modify and implement appropriate assessments/communication educational access for students with orthopedic impairments
- Describe how to access equipment and demonstrate safe lifting and positioning practices
