Step Into a Project Manager Role with Authority

This introductory course to the Project Management Certificate will review the value of stakeholder identification, communication, and managing business partner relationships. Students will learn how the project manager can approach complex business relationships and projects while influencing their team and stakeholders positively. In addition, students will identify the leadership skills and styles necessary to create a high-performing team capable of realizing and managing projects from current to future state outcomes. 

This course aligns with the  7th edition of the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) and The Standard for Project Management.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify stakeholders and understand how to analyze, engage, and monitor stakeholder relationships.
  • Detail the efforts necessary to create effective communication approaches with stakeholders and how to manage the influence of stakeholders based on their ability to impact or influence the project.
  • Analyze the current project environment and organizational culture with a focus on fostering behaviors to create a high performing team
  • Understand the need for cultivating a positive team culture and the leadership skills and styles needed to promote a high performing project team
  • Define the responsible behaviors essential to promoting integrity, care, trustworthiness, and compliance in an organizational environment
  • Determine what leadership looks like and how it can be exercised on a project team to enhance positive project outcomes
  • Establish current process state and realize the scope for manageable change
  • Synthesize the relationship between projects, stakeholders, and the related principles that aid in a successful project experience

Course Details

  • This is the first course in the Project Management Certificate program and is delivered fully online.
  • This course consists of seven engaging learning modules, with completed coursework due each week.
  • Course weeks begin every Tuesday and end each Monday.

Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for those seeking a hands-on approach to gaining project management skills and methodologies.

The instructors in this certificate program have many years of combined experiences, tales from the trenches, actual case scenarios and expertise to share with all project management students.

Required Course Materials: Two Texts, A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Seventh Edition and The Standard for Project Management by PMI (combined purchase) and An Introduction to Project Management by Kathy Schwalbe, all available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore.  These same books will be used in the following three courses (PMP-X858, PMP-X859, and PMP-X860) in the Project Management Certificate program.
