This course offers teaching techniques and background knowledge in the Slingerland® Adaptation for Classroom Use of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. It is appropriate for all educational settings. The relationship of learning reading skills to the acquisition of oral language and its development will be explored. Multisensory techniques that begin with single units of sight, sound and feel and progress to larger units will be taught and practiced. These techniques include decoding skills, phrase reading, vocabulary development, reading with comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills, leading to increased fluency. A variety of activities will be used at each session, including lecture, demonstration, practice, and group discussion.

Course Objectives:

• Build an integrated lesson plan based on current curriculum materials
• Actively practice the Slingerland® multisensory techniques
• Bring current reading research findings into classroom lessons
• Provide instructional strategies that will increase comprehension and fluency skills
• Study the organization of the English language
• Acquire a systematic structure for decoding and vocabulary development

Participant Activities:

• Make contributions to class discussions and activities that indicate understanding of the Slingerland® Multisensory Approach for teaching reading
• Prepare plans for presenting the acquired skills to the class
• Recognize the characteristics of multisensory instruction for all children, especially those who struggle with written language
• Integrate the Slingerland® Approach and the reading curriculum currently used

Learner Outcomes

• Understand the principles of multisensory instruction as supported by current research
• Understand the development of oral language skills as related to written language
• Create language arts lessons in the Slingerland® Approach to Language Arts which integrates the following elements:
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Decoding
  • Vocabulary
  • Structured text reading (phrases and sentences)
  • Reading comprehension and fluency
• Identify major characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based reading disabilities
• Understand the organization of the English language and the application of morphology to decoding
• Understand the application of the Slingerland® Approach to existing classroom curriculum materials
