Course Description

Credit Validation for San Diego County Office of Education Added Authorization Candidates Only

All candidates must be enrolled first with SDCOE Added Authorizations Program prior to registering for credit validation with USD. Please visit the SDCOE AASE website for program enrollment information.

This course focuses on a wide variety of topics and issues related to Traumatic Brain Injury. Many different aspects of the student with a traumatic brain injury are examined from a variety of different vantage points and perspectives. Course content includes defining characteristics of TBI, impact of cognitive, communicative, physical/motor deficits, structure and function of the hemispheres/lobes of the brain, use of medical assessment results and coordination/collaboration with the hospital/rehabilitation facility, collaboration with other school team members and their roles with TBI assessment and therapy, frequency of assessment and IEPs, behavioral and social/emotional  implications and challenges and collaboration with the families. The expected student outcome is demonstration of knowledge and awareness regarding major issues related to Traumatic Brain Injury.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify the unique characteristics of students with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the core challenges associated with open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in areas such as cognition, language, memory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking, judgment, problem solving, sensory, perceptual and motor abilities, psychosocial behavior, physical functions, information processing and speech
  • Become proficient in implementing evidence-based and multifaceted methodologies and adjust their teaching and positive behavior support strategies based upon the unique profile of students with TBI
  • Use and interpret appropriate assessments to drive program decisions for students with TBI
  • Apply the Individualized Educational Plan and the Individual Health Care Plan to address any medical, physical, academic or psychosocial needs of students with TBI
  • Understand the long-term effects on the self-concept and emotional well-being of students who acquire TBI as well as the effect on their family members and peers and know appropriate supports and services to address these issues
  • Demonstrate skilled collaboration with other school and agency-based service providers and provide guidance and support as the student transitions and reintegrates into/from hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, home and school
  • Provide appropriate linkages for post-school placements/agencies and services through the ITP process

Audience: This course is specifically for teachers who hold a preliminary or clear Education Specialist Credential and seek to add an authorization to that credential

Refund Policy: All Credit Validation enrollments are refundable, less a $25 fee, if requested within 30 days of enrollment date. There will be no refunds for Credit Validation after the allotted 30 days.
