Course Description

Credit Validation for San Diego County Office of Education Added Authorization Candidates Only

All candidates must be enrolled first with SDCOE Added Authorizations Program prior to registering for credit validation with USD. Please visit the SDCOE AASE website for program enrollment information.

This course focuses on a wide variety of topics and issues related to early childhood special education. Many different aspects of early childhood special education are examined from a variety of different vantage points and perspectives. Course content includes developing comprehension of typical and atypical development in children birth to pre-K, knowledge of assessment and evaluation requirements specified under IDEA part B and part C, tools to ensure that the intervention and/or instructional environments are appropriate to the individual child and family system in the context of cultural and linguistic diversity, developing skills for collaborating with and supporting families throughout the planning and implementation of the IFSP/IEP process, specialized health care, knowledge of and ability to use a variety of assessment techniques and administer selected norm-referenced instruments and protocols for young children that lead to determining eligibility as well as designing, implementing , and monitoring evidence based practices embedded in activities in all developmental domains for young children including English language learners in natural as well as the developmentally appropriate inclusive school environments, structure and organize the classroom environment including paraprofessionals to provide learning supports for students with autism and other disabilities. Each candidate will participate in reflective evaluation with a supervisor trained to guide the professional development of the early childhood special educator. Expected student outcome is demonstration of knowledge and awareness regarding major issues related to early childhood special education.

  • Articulate the importance of and strategies for collaboration with families and caregivers
  • Understand assessment tools and procedures to monitor student learning and develop a meaningful and legally-compliant IFSP/IEP
  • Understand specialized health care and the state & community resources available to educators and families

Refund Policy: All Credit Validation enrollments are refundable, less a $25 fee, if requested within 30 days of enrollment date. There will be no refunds for Credit Validation after the allotted 30 days.
