Course Description

Discover How to Enhance Your Teaching and Student Learning with Informational Text and Nonfiction

This course offers new ways of creating lessons that implement the Common Core’s College and Career Readiness anchor standards for reading, Key Ideas and Details and Craft and Structure.  Teachers will understand how they can teach nonfiction standards in a much more engaging way.

Participants will:

  • Identify and list new creative methods
  • Develop new lesson plan ideas and activities
  • Reflect and analyze how these new strategies will impact their teaching
  • Construct a physical corner in their classroom, and create and explain a standards-based game

Learner Outcomes

  • Be empowered to teach students how to deconstruct informational text/nonfiction by using the reading standards of Key Ideas and Details, and Craft and Structure
  • Discover creative methods, activities and projects to best teach students how to understand nonfiction text
  • Effectively use any informational text to create interesting and meaningful lessons for students
  • Use self-reflection to enhance and strengthen teaching skills
  • Synthesize the information and methods discovered into a creative learning game and a nonfiction corner in the classroom

Course Details

Number of Units: 3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for teachers (Grades 1 - 6), beginning or veteran teachers, that want to use creative, fun and clear strategies in order to teach informational text/non-fiction as required under the Common Core State Standards.

Course Materials: No text required, however there is a requirement to have access to a designated grade level appropriate children's book (titles provided in the course) that can be found in either your classroom or your school or public library, or purchased at your local bookstore or online at Amazon.com. This course can be completed with or without students.
