Course Description
Develop Skills for Counseling International School Students
To be a counselor in an international school requires culturally focused skills and sensitivities. This course explores the skills and resources necessary to be a culturally competent counselor and provides a practical approach to running effective School Counseling programming for international school communities. Through case presentations, simulations, and other active participation strategies, participants will explore and practice skills related to:
- The ideal and real role of the International School Counselor
- Third Culture Kids and Adults
- Understanding and supporting students, parents and teachers coping with transient populations
- Ethical cultural dilemmas faced by International School Counselors
Learner Outcomes
This class will fulfill the learning objectives as outlined in CACREP Standard F.2:
- Cross cultural and pluralistic characteristics within and among diverse groups internationally
- Theories and models of cross cultural counseling, cultural identity development, and social justice and advocacy
- Cross cultural counseling competencies
- The impact of heritage, attitudes, beliefs, understandings, and acculturative experiences on an individual's views of others
- The effects of power and privilege for counselors and clients
- Help-seeking behaviors of diverse clients
- The impact of spiritual beliefs on clients' and counselors' worldviews
- Strategies for identifying and eliminating barriers, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination
Course Details
Number of Units: 3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours
Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for:
- Candidates who wish to work or are employed as school counselors in international schools
- Recent graduates, career changers, aspiring counselors, and educators who wish to develop their competencies in the field of school counseling
Course Format: Online Fixed-Date (fully online).
Refund Policy: To receive a refund, students need to drop the course at pce.sandiego.edu through their student account portal before midnight (11:59PT) on the third day of the course. The refund of the course fee will be returned less a processing fee of 10% of the course tuition. No refunds will be issued after this deadline.
Enrollment Open Through: The first day of class or until maximum enrollment has been met. If maximum enrollment has been met then please add yourself to the Waitlist.
Course Materials: All students will be supplied with access to materials via Google Drive. The Google Drive contains additional required reading materials which will be updated often. The instructor will give a week's notice before covering them in class. The following list of 'recommended' texts are provided to assist students in building a professional library, but may not be explicitly covered in class.

Prerequisites
Participants currently or formerly have worked in an international counselor position.
