Course Description
Credit Validation for DoDEA Participants Only
This course is designed to allow teachers and staff the opportunity to study, in-depth, the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices (EMTP) from our District Action Plan (DAP). This course supports all math teachers in implementing and sustaining EMTP 1,2,4 and 8 to strengthen standard based instruction. This class will be utilizing The 5 Practices in Practice. Each participant will reflect on their practice, view exemplars, and link the 5 practices to their own instruction. This course will provide detailed support for ambitious teaching. Ambitious teaching requires attention to equity and to challenge the long-standing practices to provide access and opportunity for every student, so they can develop strong positive identities as learners of mathematics. At the center of ambitious teaching is a focus on classroom discourse. The core concepts of ambitious teaching in The 5 Practices in Practice aligns to DoDEA’s definition of Excellent Instruction to maximize the learning of all students. This course uses a research based text by the National Council of Mathematic Teachers available on grade bands (elementary, middle, and high) to support the professional learning of all who teach and support math.
Learner Outcomes
- Specify learning goals and choose a high-level task that align with those goals
- Explore how the teacher expects students to solve the task and prepare questions to ask them about their thinking
- Analyze student work to assess their understanding and move thinking forward
- Selecting, sequencing, and connecting student solutions to highlight key mathematical ideas that will help achieve lesson goals
