Course Description
Discover the Importance of Character When Dealing with Student Athletes
In this course you will examine the relationship between character and athletics. You will explore ways to establish a culture of character, model positive leadership, foster ethical decision-making and promote equality in athletics. You will also enhance your personal philosophy of athletics, develop an athletic mission statement and create a cumulative final project with practical application to your current role as an athletic leader.
Throughout the course you will hear from three leaders of the University of San Diego community: Ed DeRoche, Director of the University of San Diego Character Education Resource Center; Marie Zidek, former USD Assistant Volleyball Coach; and Rich Hill, former USD Head Baseball Coach.
Learner Outcomes
- Explain the relationship between character and athletics
- Develop a philosophy of athletics that encompasses civility, sportsmanship, teamwork and an overall culture of character
- Design activities, practices and strategies that promote character development in athletics
Course Details
Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours
Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for athletic coaches and K-12 teachers who provide physical education, who want to gain a new perspective on coaching in the modern era.
