Course Description

Credit Validation for San Diego County Office of Education's TK Pathway for Credentialed Teachers Participants Only

Influenced by The California Early Childhood Curriculum Alignment Project (CAP), and in consideration of credentialed teachers working with children in Transitional Kindergarten (TK), this course will focus on the interrelationship and importance of collaboration between the family, school, and community in supporting young children’s development from birth through early childhood and will explore the influence of multiple societal contexts. This course will also examine the historical and current perspectives on diversity and the impact of systemic societal influences on children’s development, learning, and school experiences. Strategies for developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate anti-bias curriculum will be explored as well as approaches to promote inclusive and anti-racist classroom communities that are trauma-responsive and supportive to families. Students will be encouraged to self-reflect on the influence of teachers’ own culture and life experiences on teaching and interactions with children and families.

Learner Outcomes

  • Explain how the child develops within a system and is influenced by multiple factors of socialization including the educational, political, and socioeconomic impacts on children and families
  • Compare and contrast educational systems and practices, including strategies for family engagement and building partnerships between early learning settings, schools, and community organizations and agencies
  • Discuss how stereotypes, bias, discrimination, systemic oppression, and internalized privilege impact children's learning, development, and school experiences and reflect on one's own values and implicit and explicit biases and the ways in which these may positively and negatively affect teaching and learning and learn strategies to promote an inclusive and anti-racist classroom community
  • Evaluate the impact of one's own experiences on their relationships with children, families, and the community, reflect on one's own values and biases (implicit and explicit) and the ways in which these may positively and negatively affect teaching and learning, and promote an inclusive and anti-racist classroom community
  • Describe appropriate teaching strategies and potential curriculum and pedagogical modifications to help all young children access the curriculum

Course Details

Number of Units:  3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend:  This course provides continuing education for invited educators in San Diego County, that have a current California multiple subject teaching credential, and who are currently teaching or intend to teach Transitional Kindergarten. Those who are currently teaching or intend to teach Transitional Kindergarten, but do not have knowledge, experience, and/or enough coursework to meet the newly established requirements to teach Transitional Kindergarten, would benefit most from this course.  The ideal student for this course would have [1] knowledge of education and pedagogy, [2] experience in the K-12 sector, and [3] need additional coursework in child development and/or early childhood education.

Enrollment Requirement:  Be prepared to provide the 5-digit code sent with your SDCOE invitation during enrollment. If you feel that you are eligible for this program and did not receive the code, please contact the San Diego County Office of Education at sdcoetkpathway@sdcoe.net to proceed with your enrollment. Participants that are not eligible for enrollment, will be dropped from the course and refunded, less a $25 processing fee.

EDC-X724U Early Development, Principles, and Practices; EDC-X725U Early Learning Curriculum Foundations; and EDC-X726U Screening, Observation, and Assessment of Early Learning

Students enrolling in this course must have a bachelor's degree and California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
