Present Your Data to Your Intended Audience Using Visuals and Storytelling
As the world continues to generate valuable data, organizations need easy-to-use data analysis tools that provide a greater level of business intelligence — data visualization, and Tableau provides the level of insight businesses are looking for. In this course, you will learn the ins and outs of data visualization and data storytelling using Tableau, an interactive analytics platform, to visually analyze data and create meaningful interactive charts and dashboards. The lessons in this course can be applied to any career field, as you learn how to create data visualizations that are meaningful, targeted to an audience, and useful in communicating actionable information to decision-makers. You will leave the course with broad knowledge on best practices for data visualizations, experience with storytelling, and a collection of data visualization projects.
This course is the second required course in our Data Analytics and Visualization Certificate program. As such, students looking to enroll in the Data Visualization & Storytelling with Tableau class must have successfully completed the first prerequisite course, Essentials of Analytics in Excel.
Learner Outcomes
- Introduce data ethics and its impact
- Develop an understanding of the importance of storytelling, data visualization, and introduce basic concepts
- Cover the principles of creating effective visuals and have the ability to deploy these principles
- Develop an understanding of pertinent case studies, procure the ability to understand data visualization creation past static rules through leveraging neuroscience and visual perception and apply these concepts to visualization creation
- Develop an understanding of the Tableau interface and basic terminology
- Utilize Tableau for visual analysis of data through charting and basic calculations
- Create an interactive Tableau dashboard to provide insight
Course Details
Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours
Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for working professionals who have completed at a minimum a bachelor's degree or are currently enrolled in a degree program, who are interested in exploring and learning basic data analytics and data visualizations to elevate their knowledge and analytical skill set, anyone interested in breaking into fast-growing field of data analytics and practicing in-demand tools, and working professionals who want to advance their career in the data-driven fields.
Course Materials: Two texts are required:
- Storytelling with Data: A Data Visualization Guide for Business Professionals by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore
- Visual Analytics with Tableau by Alexander Loth available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore
Hands-On Lab Materials: Most course modules will be accompanied with a lab to give students an opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice. To ensure successful participation:
- Students must have Microsoft Excel on their computer
- Tableau Public is the industry-standard visualization platform that allows students to visualize data within minutes and connect with a global community to share data visualizations. Tableau Public is free software.
- Students are required to register for Tableau.com, set up a Tableau Public Profile, and download Tableau Public. Prerequisites
This is the second of four courses in the Data Analytics and Visualization Certificate.
Required successful completion of:
- DAV-X800 Essentials of Analytics in Excel
A Bachelor's degree or currently in a bachelor's program, with a basic mathematics background preferred, with at least one course, preferably, in basic statistics taken at the college level.
