Course Description

Realize the Greater Role of Creativity and Innovation in Today's Classroom

Creativity and innovation have become even more important in the automated world in which we live in today. In this course, we will consider the ‘who,’ ‘what’ and ‘why’ of supporting creativity for innovation. This course will explore why creativity is important for learning and instruction and how to give students opportunities to expand their own creativity. It will examine how the need to be creative has influenced people throughout human existence and how this intersects with history. Additionally, participants will consider how challenging one's personal status quo can benefit students by challenging them to push their thinking further and to think outside of the box.

Learner Outcomes

  • Analyze the essential elements for fostering a creative classroom environment that builds capacity through innovative thinking
  • Discuss the role that culture plays in developing products that are creative and innovative in the STEAM Classroom
  • Design lessons using specific strategies for teaching divergent thinking that will strengthen the creative skills of STEAM learners
  • Employ tools and resources that engage students in exploring creativity through STEAM-related projects
  • Explain why all individuals have the cognitive capacity for creative thought

Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for K-12 educators, as well as other school professionals, including higher education faculty, that want to understand the impact of STEAM teaching and employ new strategies within their practice.
