Course Description
Credit Validation for Slingerland Participants Only
This course offers an introduction to the Slingerland Screening Procedures, Forms A, B, C, and D. These procedures, developed by Beth H. Slingerland, are designed to help identify students with specific language disabilities. The earlier these students are identified, the sooner appropriate remediation can begin. The screenings also help identify students who may benefit from structured multisensory instruction and whose current language difficulties may extend beyond typical developmental or maturational delays and become persistent, specific language disabilities in later grades.
Learner Outcomes
- Administer the Slingerland Screening Procedures (Forms A, B, C, and D) with fidelity, including proper scheduling, environment, and subtest sequencing
- Score the Slingerland Screening Procedures accurately to ensure reliable and consistent results
- Interpret screening results to reveal individual student learning patterns and instructional needs
- Analyze student performance to identify strengths and weaknesses in language learning
- Compare auditory, visual, and kinesthetic-motor performance across each student’s screening results
- Recognize how identified strengths and weaknesses impact oral expression, reading, handwriting, spelling, and written expression
- Apply screening data to make informed instructional decisions for individual students or whole classes
- Utilize Slingerland Screening results to support appropriate referral or remediation decisions

University of San Diego – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information
The University of San Diego partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.
Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways. These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the University of San Diego; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.
Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.
