Course Description

Credit Validation for DoDEA Participants Only

AVID Critical Thinking and Engagement: A Schoolwide Approach provides a wealth of culturally relevant pedagogy and strategies that are appropriate across all age groups and student grade levels. It also challenges educators to confront their own mindsets, perceptions, and biases, and to create supportive, safe, and respectful academic environments for all students. This course is designed for participants to engage in a collaborative setting to identify key components of WICOR and evaluate implementation of WICOR strategy use within their school site.

Learner Outcomes

  • Demonstrate and achieve a comprehensive understanding of the principles of High-Quality Instructional Practices (HQIP) with an emphasis on Access & Equity
  • Make connections to college and career readiness to engage in a schoolwide implementation action plan that focuses on building student skills through the use of WICOR
  • Examine the importance of centering their instruction on WICOR as an opportunity for students to access rigorous learning across content areas
  • Explore AVID’s Coaching and Certification Instrument to address the Leadership Domain, Indicator 8: Address Barriers to Access & Equity in building relational capacity aligned with instructional equity, culturally relevant instruction, and equitable delivery of CCR content standards for all students
  • Recognize and understand their own cultural beliefs and biases in efforts to embrace the importance of equity in meeting the needs of students and bridging connections between home, school and community
  • Engage collaborative efforts through discussion boards to reflect, analyze and adjust their student- centered instructional practices to foster positive relationships with students and build relational capacity within their classroom environments
