Course Description
Cultivate Community, Create Powerful Connections and Academic Success
This course will highlight the importance of creating a community within the classroom. Teachers and students collaborate to create a social contract that will form a classroom community that will foster growth and well-being. In a classroom with a strong sense of community, research has shown that students exhibit academic, social, and emotional growth. Implementing a classroom community in a student's educational career has shown to be successful in a range of K-12 classrooms, including: under-performing, high ELL population and low socio-economic.
This course can be taken individually or as part of either the Professional Teachers Program Series or the Beginning Teachers Series.
Learner Outcomes
- Understand different methods of creating a Classroom Community
- Recognize the advantages of building a Classroom Community
- Analyze the ways in which parent/family outreach can be beneficial in a Community Classroom
- Design an implementation map to incorporate a Classroom Community in your learning environment
