Course Description

Support Grammar Learning with Literature-Based Activities

Grammar is the structure of language that all students must master.  Literature-Based Learning:  Creative Grammar Strategies (1-5) offers Grades 1-5 teachers new ways to creatively enhance their teaching skills in what is usually a less appealing subject area to teach.  This course will focus on these five parts of speech:  nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and prepositions by using specific children’s books.

Learner Outcomes

  • Creatively teach students how to understand, identify and use adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs and prepositions
  • Conduct research on these topics
  • Develop and teach a variety of lesson plans
  • Learn how to teach parts of speech from any children’s book
  • Create and develop a grammar game
  • Create a grammar “character” to support student learning
  • Reflect on and review the knowledge gained in this course

Testimonials

"This course is an excellent course that allowed me to reflect and re-evaluate how I teach. Each assignment I created was beneficial to me as an educator and stimulated the students learning outcome. Every assignment in each module had its own unique teaching and learning strategy that engages students. After each strategy I was more successful and I was hooked! This course was well designed and impacted me as a teacher. It awakened and enlightened me to be more aware of how the value of meaningful creative strategy lessons can engage and enhance a student's learning potential to its fullest." -- Rondelle Nadeau, Educator, Riverside, CA
"As a result of the course, I have a renewed focus on children's literature and read-alouds. Now that I have my eyes opened to using books for the explicit teaching of grammar, I can't stop finding new books and thinking of new ways to teach grammar creatively." -- Erin Phipp, Teacher, Grade 4
"It was a creative course, and I enjoyed it very much." -- Kathleen Cervone, Educator, Santa Rosa, CA
