Course Description

Credit Validation for Echelon Scholars Participants Only

Methods in Novel Research, Technical Analysis, and Scholarly Writing is a selective, online mentored research course for academically ambitious students. Participants work 1-on-1 with a technical research mentor to move from a broad field interest to a defined research question, conduct a literature review and state-of-the-art analysis, identify novelty and limitations in prior work, complete technical or analytical research execution, interpret results, and develop a formal scholarly manuscript.

The course emphasizes postgraduate-level research, including reading peer-reviewed literature, evaluating credible sources, applying appropriate data or technical methods, incorporating mentor feedback, and preparing research for external presentation or submission where appropriate. Echelon Scholars’ curriculum is individualized by field and project scope, but students follow a structured progression through research fundamentals, ideation, literature review, technical or analytical execution, manuscript writing, revision, internal review, and submission or presentation preparation.

The full Echelon Scholars experience typically involves approximately 100–200 hours of total student engagement, depending on the student’s field, project scope, pace, and technical requirements.

Learner Outcomes

  • Analyze peer-reviewed scholarly literature to identify credible sources, state-of-the-art methods, limitations, and research gaps in a chosen field
  • Formulate a feasible and novel research question supported by prior literature, appropriate methodology, and a clear contribution to the field
  • Apply technical, analytical, or field-specific methods to complete an original research project, including data preparation, experimentation, analysis, and interpretation where applicable

University of San Diego – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information

The University of San Diego partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.

Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways.

These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the University of San Diego; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.

Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.
