Course Description
Credit Validation for WestEd Participants Only
The goal of this course is to equip PK–2 educators with practical strategies for selecting complex, grade-level texts and designing engaging instructional experiences that build strong foundational literacy skills. Participants will learn to:
- Select and use grade-level complex texts to create effective literacy instructional experiences
- Plan high-quality, scaffolded interactions that support oral language development
- Provide multiple opportunities for students to progress from oral to written language
- Engage English Learners through interactive read-alouds featuring complex texts
Learner Outcomes
- Provide and facilitate opportunities for students to listen, speak, and read in ways that lead to writing
- Plan and scaffold writing instruction that maximizes language development
- Gather evidence of where students are in their oral and written language development

The units provided are graduate-level professional development semester units intended solely for purposes such as salary advancement and credential renewal. These units are not applicable toward a master’s degree or higher degree program at the University of San Diego.
