Engineering for Health and Sustainability 1 - ESH-X501A
Course Description
Learn Complex Adaptive Systems for Engineering, Health, and Sustainability
In this course, students will be introduced to ESH-CERT, and the complex adaptive systems that will be examined over the next few weeks in relation to engineering, health and sustainability. Students will study the key concepts of sustainability, development, social and environmental justice, ecosystems, climate change and
planetary health. They will enhance their capability to think critically in order to question assumptions relating to contemporary engineering practices and processes and to consider alternative practices in multiple domains. They will frame the outline of a transdisciplinary case study which critiques one context related to the themes of ESH in depth and considers an approach which aims to mitigate the underlying issues.
Learner Outcomes
- Deconstruct contemporary and historical engineering development and practice
- Critically analyze contemporary lenses on sustainability and climate change in relation to engineering
- Identify the complexity of factors that relate engineering to human and ecosystem health systems
- Distinguish between appropriate engineering interventions in different contexts and cultural settings
- Evaluate the framework of planetary health in relation to engineering, sustainability and health
- Develop the ability to synthesis archival information and present a case study proposal for a future intervention
