Course Description

Credit Validation for WestEd Participants Only

This course is designed to develop teacher expertise in both the theory and practice of delivering high-challenge, high-support instruction for English Learners. Educators will deepen their understanding of the evolving educational landscape and explore what it means to offer English Learners meaningful opportunities to reach their full potential as critical and productive citizens. Through engaging with disciplinary lesson exemplars, participants will learn how to set high expectations while providing the necessary supports for student success. The course also guides teachers in designing well-scaffolded lessons aligned with key standards and in fostering the academic use of English across content areas.

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the ever-shifting context against which education takes place and what it means to provide English Learners with opportunities that develop their potential to become critical and productive citizens
  • Engage in disciplinary exemplars that provide high expectations coupled with high support
  • Design well-scaffolded lessons that address key standards
  • Develop students’ academic uses of English in the disciplines

Audience: English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers in grades 6–12

Refund Policy: All Credit Validation enrollments are refundable, minus a $25 processing fee, if requested within 30 days of the enrollment date. No refunds will be issued after the 30-day period.
