Course Description

Credit Validation for DoDEA Participants Only

This course will guide School Psychologists in the Mid-Atlantic District through the process of completing a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and using the data collected from the FBA to develop a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) for an individually selected case study. The course outcome is the successful completion of both an FBA and a corresponding BIP.

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe relevant factors, such as DoDEA guidance and case law, that guide the development of a legally defensible functional behavior assessment and behavior intervention plan
  • Identify conditions under which a functional behavior assessment (FBA) is warranted and available school resources that support the process
  • Outline the components of a comprehensive FBA
  • Conduct an FBA based on a student case
  • Select replacement behaviors, antecedent strategies, and consequence interventions based on behavioral function for behavior intervention plan (BIP) development
  • Explain steps for proposing, training, and monitoring the BIP
  • Write a BIP based on information from a case study and prepare to submit it for feedback
