Course Description
Evaluate a new Approach to Culturally Responsive Teaching Philosophies Using Art
Culturally Relevant Teaching and Engagement Through an Art Lens will explore ways that the visual arts can be used to foster culturally responsive engagement in your classrooms. Over the length of the course you will reflect upon your own culturally responsive practices, experiment with classroom-applicable art techniques (watercolor), and study contemporary artists who exemplify diverse view points and approaches to communicating ideas. You will produce artworks, a reflective essay, make artist presentations, and finally write a lesson plan in which you apply course content to the needs of your specific teaching position.
Final submission for all sections is due on or before May 18, 2025. Transcripts will be issued 7 days after the final course date.

Course Details
Number or Units: 3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours
Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for K-12 educator professionals and support staff for any subject/focus area that they may want to integrate Culturally Responsive Teaching methods using art integration.
Course Materials: There are no textbook requirements for this course, but to complete the requirements of the course you will need the following:
- Watercolors (preferably dry cake watercolors)
- Watercolor paper (heavy cardstock can be used, but “pills up” faster than most watercolor papers)
- At least 3 different watercolor brushes (at least 1 round, and 1 detail, 3rd brush of choice (though a flat/square brush or another size round are recommended)
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Black thin point waterproof pen (one that won’t bleed if it gets wet)
- Painters tape
- Water cup
- Palette
Course Format: Online Self-Paced, within given dates*. The course starts on Monday, March 17, 2025 and should be completed on or before Sunday, May 18, 2025
