Moving Forward in a Thinking Classroom - EDC-X796X
Course Description
Credit Validation for DoDEA Participants Only
I have committed to engaging students in a thinking classroom, but how do I know they are learning? What are the most valuable competencies for students to possess, and how do we develop and nurture these competencies in our students? The answer to this question lies in evaluating what we value. How we choose to evaluate is just as important as what we choose to evaluate. If we want our students to be active partners in their learning, we need to find ways to use formative assessment to inform both teaching (and teachers) and learning (and learners). As educators, we will explore shifting away from what is sometimes referred to as “event-based grading” and toward outcomes-based grading (also known as standards-based or evidence-based grading). The benefits of this shift are many—from increased student agency to improved student performance (O’Connor, 2009; Stiggins et al., 2006).Learner Outcomes
- Explore consolidation strategies
- Shift to using meaningful notes
- Extend and refine the launch, body, and closure of lessons
- Elevate formative assessment to ensure all students have equitable access to the content and competencies of their grade-level standards
- Create tools to help students map where they are and where they are going
- Develop valuable grading resources

University of San Diego – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information
The University of San Diego partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.
Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways. These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the University of San Diego; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.
Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.
