National History Day® (NHD) is proud to work with the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). The. In this program, teachers will select a servicemember from their community who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, and did not return. The course includes four live webinars with an expert historian and an NHD curriculum specialist. Teachers will develop strategies to conduct original research and draft a profile for publication on National History Day’s Silent Hero website (nhdsilentheroes.org/). The profiles will be shared by NHD and the ABMC in a social media campaign.Learner Outcomes
- Conduct secondary research to place their assigned conflict in historical context
- Conduct original primary source research using a variety of sources
- Analyze military records from the National Archives and Records Administration
- Practice historical thinking skills by participating in five live webinar programs with leading historians and NHD curriculum specialists
- Complete research organizers to verify factual information
- Develop a bibliography of research sources
- Write a profile for publication by National History Day
