Credit Validation for Institute of Talmudic Philosophy Participants Only

Jewish day school educators, rabbis, graduate students seeking continuing education to broaden their knowledge of Talmudic Philosophy; career advancement/ development.

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the significance of Torah Min HaShamayim (“the Torah is from Heaven”) as a central premise in Talmudic Philosophy
  • Understand and identify key names, important concepts, and critical themes related to the beginnings of Talmudic Philosophy
  • Understand the contrasting views concerning reward for doing good deeds
  • Understand the central role of humility in learning, judgment, compromise, civility, and personal dignity
  • Understand the philosophy of Bartenura and the significance of his insights to Talmudic Philosophy

Required Materials: Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Avot, Ethics of the Fathers. Redacted by Rabbi Judah the Prince, c.200 CE, Bartenura on Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Ovadiah Bartenura
