Course Description

Develop Smart Internet Habits with Your Students to Maintain Online Safety

This course introduces and supports educators with effective strategies and best practices for navigating their classroom with technological safety and security.  The course is designed and delivered for educators to support other educators and to engage their students to utilize technology in the classroom safely and securely. 

Educators will learn about technology safety and security through research and reflection. Educators will learn about managing the day-to-day responsibilities of making sure that they and their students are utilizing technology safely and securely. Educators will gain a deep understanding of resources and tools to effectively use technology with safety and security. Educators will develop a comprehensive lesson plan to teach students technology safety and security.

This course has content equivalency to the following course, and cannot be taken again:  EDU-X776R.

 

Learner Outcomes

  • Examine common threats to safety and security online
  • Analyze how to recognize and counteract online student safety and security
  • Identify legal and ethical requirements placed on teachers to keep students and their information safe and secure
  • Survey cyber safety considerations
  • Identify sources of information to raise awareness of cyber threats and how to be safer online
  • Develop effective strategies for making their classroom safe and secure for students' online activities
  • Reflect on lessons learned through research and work completed
  • Develop a lesson plan that meets the needs of all students to implement in their classroom

Number or Units: 3.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for K-12 educators interested in learning new strategies to promote digital safety in the classroom, which includes:  Elementary and Secondary School Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Curriculum Coordinators, Literacy Coaches, Response to Intervention Teams, New Teachers, School Administrative Teams, and other interested stakeholders.
