Discover Key Intervention Responses to Finding Individual Solutions

Departing from the case-study format, this course offers students an opportunity to learn and practice new skills in a safe environment. Solution Focused Brief Counseling allows students real strategies that they can experiment within their own practice during this condensed course. The main mode of instruction for this course is roleplay, practice and reflection

Learner Outcomes

  • Discover how and when to use the six key questions of Solution Focused Counseling
  • Know how to identify and utilize a student’s strengths in navigating troubling times
  • Utilize the role of empathy and relationships in a counseling setting
  • Reframe problems in a way that provides student with more options
  • Determine when to refer a student and family for outside counseling
  • Understand the role of the counselor in student support meetings (response to intervention)

Course Details

Number of Units: 1.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for:

  • Candidates who wish to work or are employed as school counselors in international schools
  • Recent graduates, career changers, aspiring counselors, and educators who wish to develop their competencies in the field of school counseling

Course Materials: All students will be supplied with access to materials via Google Drive. The Google Drive contains additional required reading materials which will be updated often. The instructor will give a week's notice before covering them in class. The following list of recommended texts are provided to assist students in building a professional library, but may not be explicitly covered in class.

Texts, Solution-Focused Counseling in Schools (3rd edition) by John J. Murphy available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore

International Handbook for Policy Research on School-Based Counseling by John C. Carey, Belinda Harris, et. al available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore

Course Meetings:  This is a one week intensive course with Daily zoom meetings. The Instructor will reach out with an introduction email 48 hours prior to your first course meeting.

Refund Policy: To receive a refund, students need to drop the course at pce.sandiego.edu through their student account portal before midnight (11:59PT) on the third day of the course. The refund of the course fee will be returned less a processing fee of 10% of the course tuition. No refunds will be issued after this deadline.
