Course Description

Use Best Practices and Universal Design for All Learners in Your Lessons

This course focuses on the concept that each student deserves access to education, and a teacher must nurture and support each student’s learning. Students will identify the needs presented by diverse classrooms: diversity of ability; linguistic diversity; developmental diversity; socioeconomic diversity; racial diversity; ethnic diversity; gender diversity; and students with identified special needs in an inclusive classroom. Students will focus on implementing classroom strategies to proactively expand access, differentiate instruction, and provide interventions that support such diverse students.

This course is also applicable toward the Effective Classroom Management Solutions Certificate course requirements.

Learner Outcomes

  • Survey the role of teachers in reaching every student and closing achievement gaps
  • Identify specific instructional strategies that can assist in reaching every student and closing achievement gaps
  • Examine the use of formative assessments in designing instruction
  • Assess the Response to Intervention (RTI) approach
  • Explore the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators of students
  • Investigate strategies for fostering student engagement
  • Analyze teachers’ roles in implementing Individual Education Plans
  • Identify strategies for teaching students with IEPs
  • Research challenges facing English Language Learners in the mainstream classroom
  • Identify teaching strategies associated with English Language Learners
  • Appraise some of the challenges faced by students of diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and their teachers
  • Examine some of the challenges facing students of diverse economic background and gender identification and their teachers
  • Evaluate strategies for designing instruction that increases academic achievement for economic and gender diverse students
  • Create a comprehensive final project presentation that incorporates principles you have learned throughout this course
