Electronic Health Records Certificate Program Curriculum

Enroll in one or more courses to earn graduate-level extension credits. You can expect the following from our online, self-paced EHR courses:

  • You can log online when convenient, provided you complete the course within six months of enrollment
  • As long as you have internet access (and any textbook requirements, if applicable), you can complete assignments from anywhere

The certificate program is an online self-paced program comprised of five courses which may be taken in any order: Care Coordination - Acute, Care Coordination - Ambulatory, Diagnostic EHR Services, Patient Access & Revenue Cycle, and Provider Experience. These courses may also be taken individually.

Earn your Electronic Health Records professional certificate by taking the five required courses. Students have a maximum of five years to complete all of the courses to earn their certificate.

Q: What is the program duration? 

A: Working quickly, students would be able to complete the certificate in about 3-4 months. If a student took the maximum amount of time with each course (6 months), it would take them two and a half years to complete all five courses. 

Q: What is the time commitment? 

A: Once registered for a course, students have access within 24 hours. They have up to six months to complete each course, but some students will move quickly and can complete a course in just a few weeks.

Q: What are the terms of enrollment and application deadline?

A: Enrollment is ongoing – students may start at any time.

Q: What are the course requirements? 

A: There are no prerequisites, but some knowledge of medical terminology is helpful. If students do not have a background in medical language, USD also offers an online, self-paced Medical Terminology course.

Q: What is the class format? 

A: Online Self-Paced. Students move through the modules in consecutive order, completing assignments and quizzes as they move to the next module.
