Transition Your Teaching to the Adult Audience for In-Service and/or Professional Development Facilitation

This three-course certificate program will focus on understanding, application and fundamentals of adult learning theory with a primary focus on Andragogy.  The first course will focus on basic information regarding adult learning theory, its differences from pedagogy, the six assumptions of andragogy, an adult learning process model, and applying all of this to one's job.  The second course will explore theory of teaching and learning more deeply, explore human resource development, ideas beyond Andragogy, neuroscience and exploring diversity and inclusion.  The final course will focus on bringing everything together with application.  Topics in the final course will include online learning for adults, computer learning for adults, future directions for adult learning, learner analysis and inventories.

This certificate program provides continuing education for those interested in working with adult learners in a training or teaching manner, such as school administrators, teacher leaders, human resource developers, and college instructors and professors.

Program Details

Complete the requirements below to earn a professional certificate in Professional Development Facilitation and Leadership. The certificate can be completed in as few as two semesters. Read Certificate Benefits and Policy.

  • Complete all three courses in the following order, EDU-X797R, EDU-X716S, and EDU-X717S (total of 9 units)

Enroll in one or more courses to earn graduate-level extension credits. We recommend that you take them sequentially as they build upon each other.  You can expect the following from Online Self-Paced courses:

  • You can go online when convenient, completing courses within six months or sooner of enrollment.
  • As long as you have access to the Internet (and any text book requirements stated, if applicable), you can complete assignments.
  • You'll read articles and watch videos, and interact with resources provided within the course.
  • Completed assignments are submitted and then evaluated by an assigned instructor.
  • Instructor interaction and feedback are provided between assignments.
  • Gain an understanding of the six assumptions of Andragogy
  • Develop an understanding of the Andragogy process model
  • Apply adult learning theory to design effective learning experiences for adult learners
  • Employ adult learning theory to a variety of scenarios and platforms
